Leadership Philosophy

Be a leader who listens, empowers and allows team members to make mistakes. To which, through mistakes growth can be exponential

I believe in….

ensuring that the people I work with feel empowered, encouraged and trusted. I believe that team members need to be allowed to feel accountable for their work and that they are responsible and accountable for their work.

From hiring me as their first UX designer, I was determined to grow and influence a team of people to advocate the importance of not just the product but proving that by improving a users experience, and taking small steps towards this philosophy.

How I work with my UX Teammates

I have 3 pillars that I follow:

  1. Trust
  2. Transparency
  3. Train through exposure

In order to build a relationship based in trust, I make an effort to understand who they are first, rather than just what they can contribute to the team. Knowing this makes my team members feel heard. Often, the simple gesture of getting to know someone for what their motivations are the best way of knowing how to help them move along in their career. Just like needing to know why your users do what they do, knowing what makes each and individual team member wants, to do, wants to be, what they struggle with, what makes them happy, can be essential to ensuring they enjoy working with and trust you.

Collaborating with the collective Product and Tech team

Another important piece that I have learned and honed as a UX designer and moving into leadership positions is that sometimes the best way for me to work is to keep a very trusting and communicative relationship with other teams. I still believe that the empathy is key. It’s important to understand the needs of each team, who they report to and how do they work. As I’m generally adaptable, I will try my best to work in away that will help my team members work and to improve collaboration. Communication and consistency is key and therefore, creating a design system with rules so that they can “help themselves” or even get up to date if they need to.
